Lasers (stands for light amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation) were discovered and developed in the mid-20th century, and have become one of the most powerful and versatile laboratory research tools. Instrumentation that uses lasers includes confocal microscopes, fluorescent microscopes, 3D laser scanning microscopes, lifetime fluorescence spectrometers, spectroflurometers, and mass spectrometers.
Different types of lasers produce electromagnetic radiation at different wavelengths, and are useful for imaging and analyzing a wide range of samples. For example, Raman spectrometers use Raman lasers as an excitation source. These are often coupled with microscopes to allow measurements beyond standard Raman wavelengths.
Optical instruments and accessories include optical filters and gratings; thin film coatings; ultra-low anti-reflection coatings for dielectrics, metals, polymers and plastics; laser mirrors and mirror coatings; beamsplitters; and piezoelectric and computer-controlled motorized linear stages for microscopes.
