Clinical Diagnostics
Clinical diagnostics covers medical screening and diagnostics, therapeutics, genetics testing and research, and blood bank screening. Medical diagnosticians evaluate serum, saliva, plasma, urine and feces for the presence and effects of drugs, vitamins, hormones, allergens, toxins, infectious diseases, and a variety of other substances.
High-volume clinics use high-throughput, automated liquid handling workstations that eliminate manual volumetric variations caused by handling errors and automate repetitive protocols. Laboratory information management systems (LIMS) software helps clinical diagnosticians manage workflow, enter and analyze data, maintain inventory, assure quality control, create reports, and manage customer relations. LIMS can be integrated into enterprise software, and can be accessed on laboratory PCs or mobile devices.
Clinical diagnostics kits contain all the necessary consumables for a particular assay or test. ELISA kits test for the presence of antibodies to a wide variety of proteins. Other test kits detect and measure melatonin, bilirubin, zinc, vitamin D, amino acids, bile acids, basophils, mycotoxins, H. pylori, and many more.
Laboratory instruments used for clinical diagnostics include spectrophotometers, mass spectrometers, microscopes, HPLC liquid chromatography systems, and microplate readers. Handheld Raman systems are used for non-destructive verification of chemical, biological and explosive materials, in various shapes, sizes and formulations, reading through glass or plastic containers.
Equipment and accessories used for clinical diagnostics include cell culture incubators; ultra-low freezers; shielded cabinet X-ray systems, automated samplers, column heaters and chillers.
