Mass spectrometry works by ionizing a target sample using a laser, plasma, or chemicals. The sample’s atoms become ionized when particles, such as electrons, are knocked out of their atomic structure, leaving a net positive or negative charge. Next, an ion extractor removes the ions and sorts them using electric or magnetic fields, according to their mass-to-charge ratios. An ion detector counts the electric charges to determine the number of each type of ion, creating a mass spectrum of the original sample. By comparing this spectrum with those of known samples, experienced researchers can determine the exact amount and type of atoms in the unknown (target) sample, as well as its molecular structure.

Mass spectrometry is often combined with other investigative methods within the same instrument, in order to extend its analysis capabilities. Common mass spectrometry instruments include x-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometers, LC/MS/MS triple quadrupole ion trap systems, GC/MS systems, HPLC and UHPLC systems, Raman spectroscopy, and integrated chip-based mass detectors.
