Spectroscopy
Spectroscopy is an established method for quantifying and qualifying solid, liquid or gaseous materials for industrial, agricultural, medical, environmental, forensic, military, and almost any other laboratory application. For example, miniaturized hand-held Raman spectroscopes have become essential tools for identifying and verifying pharmaceutical chemicals to meet increasing global regulatory standards.
Spectroscopy differs from microscopy in that it focuses an energy source, typically a laser, on a target specimen. Atoms or molecules in a specimen may either absorb the energy or be excited to release energy at different wavelengths. The altered energy rays produce a series of distinct spectral lines in an absorption or transmission spectrum, which can be used to identify the presence and relative amounts of specific elements in the sample.
All spectroscopes contain an energy source, optics to modify and direct the energy beam toward the sample, a detector to collect the altered energy rays, and a camera and software to record and analyze the results. Many different spectroscopy techniques have been developed, including X-ray fluorescence (XRF), laser-induced breakdown (LIBS), tunable diode laser absorption (TDLAS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and nondispersive infrared (NDIR) spectroscopy. These may be combined with other analysis techniques, such as a Raman microscope or a liquid or gas chromatograph, within a single system.
Accessories for spectroscopy include high-voltage power supplies, spectroscopic data processing and interpretation software, drying ovens, dissolution systems, motorized stages, chromatography column heaters and heater/chillers, auto-samplers, and microvolume cuvettes to hold spectroscopy samples.
